Astigmatism Treatment with our Jacksonville Eye Doctors at VAL-Uvision

Although the term is unfamiliar and confusing to many people, astigmatism simply means that your eye is not perfectly round. Most people have at least a small degree of astigmatism and may not notice any symptoms. A slightly higher degree of astigmatism, often in combination with nearsightedness or farsightedness, is a common reason for people to visit our optometrist in Jacksonville, FL for treatment.

Causes of Astigmatism

Most people are born with astigmatism. However, many people do not experience problems with their vision until they also develop myopia or hyperopia. At this point, the degree of astigmatism may increase, or simply the combination of the issues together may cause noticeable symptoms. Sometimes, astigmatism may develop later in life due to a rare event such as an eye injury or condition such as keratoconus.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

The main and usually only symptom of astigmatism is blurred vision. Sometimes, this blurriness may only occur in one part of your vision, which is a little different than myopia or hyperopia, where everything at a certain distance is blurry. People with astigmatism may notice that items appear slightly wavy, as well. If you notice that you are having trouble seeing things, come visit our Jacksonville FL optometry clinic for an eye exam.

Treating Astigmatism

In most cases, people will be treated with glasses or contact lenses. Contact lenses for people with astigmatism are considered hard to fit contacts because a special type of lens must be used. However, there are a number of options on the market for people with astigmatism who wish to wear contact lenses.

Soft toric lenses are the most popular option. Normal contact lenses move around in the eye, which is not a problem when they are being used to correct a refractive error such as myopia, where the degree of error remains the same across the eye. However, in astigmatism, the correction being used must be applied to the affected part of the eye in order to be effective. Toric lenses are designed to stay in position so that they can effectively correct astigmatism.

Some people elect to pursue refractive surgery such as LASIK. These types of surgery can treat some degrees of astigmatism if your eyes are otherwise healthy. We provide pre- and post-laser surgery care at our clinic if you decide to pursue this option.
